8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller

Feature

The 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth controller does a wonderful job of blending retro aesthetics with modern engineering. As an older gamer, there is an immediate pull toward the classic styling and color scheme; it looks and feels as if it were pulled straight from the mid-90s to sit alongside the original Nintendo 64. However, once you pick it up, it becomes clear that this is far more than just a nostalgia trip.

Design and Comfort

Unlike the infamous "three-pronged" design of the original Nintendo 64 controller, 8BitDo has opted for a form factor that fits much more naturally in the hand. It is comfortable for long sessions, trading the awkward ergonomics of the past for a layout that feels familiar to any modern PC or console player. However, a critical difference to other contemporary controllers is the single joystick.

8BitDo has outfitted it with a signature concave rubber cap featuring the original ridges, ensuring your thumb won’t slip during a tense moment in GoldenEye 007 or Super Mario 64. Under the hood, the stick has been upgraded with Hall Effect sensors, which use magnets rather than physical contact to measure movement. This effectively eliminates stick drift—a common death sentence for original N64 hardware. To further bolster longevity, the stick assembly includes a metal ring to reduce friction and wear.

Modern Touches

While it looks the part, the internal tech is thoroughly modern. The original N64 controller required a bulky "Rumble Pak" to be inserted into the back; the 8BitDo 64 has vibration motors built directly into the chassis. It is also entirely wireless, removing the risk of tripping over cables across the living room.

Compatibility is extensive, covering Windows, Mobile, and both Switch 1 and 2. On the Switch 2, I noticed the A and B buttons defaulted to the bumper functionality—a quirk of how the original layout maps to modern systems. However, as with most 8BitDo hardware, the buttons are fully reconfigurable. Having those extra top buttons (the dual Z triggers) actually comes in handy for mapping modern commands without sacrificing the classic feel of the C-buttons and the oversized A/B layout.

Performance

The signature C-buttons, Start button, and A/B layout are positioned with precision. For those of us who grew up on the console, using this controller feels like welcoming an old friend back home. The buttons are tactile and responsive, and the octagonal gate around the joystick provides that distinct eight-way feedback that was so essential for 90s 3D platformers.

Whether connected via Bluetooth or the included USB-C cable, the latency was imperceptible. It bridges the gap between generations flawlessly, offering a robust, long-lasting alternative to hunting down aging original hardware.

Verdict

The 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth controller is a wonderful piece of kit for anyone looking to revisit the 64-bit era on modern platforms. It respects the source material while fixing some of its historical flaws. The single thumbstick may be a drawback for games that rely on a twin-stick combination, but the one that is available works extremely well. The buttons, too are responsive, and I found that the extra configurable front facing buttons allow simpler functionality.
