Review

Ahhh, someone finally pushed 'fast forward'...

Create a class

The multiplayer component is the deepest yet. The entire online side of this game is centered on an experience points system, much like an RPG. You will start out with only a few game types and weapons available. After a few games you begin to gain experience which in turn ranks up your character. All the while you are unlocking different game types and weapons for your use. Each weapon has its own upgrade system, the more you use a single firearm, the more you can customize it. 25 kills with a M4 and you unlock a Red Dot Sight, 25 headshots and you unlock a silencer and so on. The game types that are available will surely please a wide audience, seeing as how there is a plethora of play options to go around. Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch are standard FPS cannon fodder but Call of Duty 4 has a few others that will offer a bit of variation.

But when you unlock the “Create a Class” mode, you really start to feel the uniqueness of this game. In this mode you are able to fully customize your primary and secondary weapon with attachments that tickle your fancy for that specific layout. There are 5 custom slots available and each can be made into different pre-sets so that you can change on the fly as online battles call for such a change. Each created pre-set has a set of 3 perks that can be selected, 2 if you have a grenade launcher attachment on your primary weapon. It will take some serious tinkering to find the right combination for you, but you will have one hell of a time doing it.

Replay

After you have played for some time, you will reach the cap of your rank, 55. At this stage you can continue to play the game with all the weapons, perks and game types unlocked or you can choose to start again. You can choose to start back at rank 1, but this time you will have a star next to your name. That way other soldiers know that you have been around and can be trusted in a fight. This feature is mostly for bragging rights but also drags hardcore and ‘completionists’ back for more.

Aside from that, there is an Arcade Mode that becomes unlocked when you complete the single player campaign. It allows you to go through the entire campaign with this mode on or elect to tackle each mission on its own. In Arcade Mode you have a score in the top right of the screen and points are added to it pending on where you hit the enemy and how many you have killed without dying. It is a fun little distraction that can give you your Call of Duty 4 fix if you want to itch that scratch in a rush.

Beating its predecessors

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is the best Call of Duty I have ever played. It beats its predecessor in every area: the best multiplayer, gameplay, graphics, story telling, the list goes on. The AI might seem to act like a headless chickens sometimes but the good greatly outweighs the bad. If you enjoy Call of Duty or even if you like FPS games, you owe it to yourself to check this one out.
