Nearing its release, the hype is starting to swell

Makeshift Arsenal

Just like in any other survival game, you can find different things to help you survive in the game, like weapons, key items for puzzles and healing items. However, Alone in the Dark 5 gives you more of a makeshift arsenal.

There are numerous different things you can find, such as flammable liquid, sticky tape, glow sticks, blood packs and a lot of other items. All these things give you a vast amount of action options. You can put sticky tape on a glow stick and throw it onto the ceiling to create a light, throw a bottle of flammable liquid at an enemy, shoot it to create a bomb or even create a line with the flammable liquid and set it on fire. Anything that would usually be susceptible to fire, such as wooden tables and chairs will catch fire and spread the blaze to anything else that can be set alight.

Vehicles

One element overlooked in most survival horror games is vehicles. You often don’t see vehicles in these games, because you travel around on foot easily enough. Alone in the Dark brings vehicles into the concept, for more than just getting from A to B. You can use cars to run over enemies, hide in them when being attacked, turn on the radio to listen for distress calls and even search the cars for anything that can be used to your advantage.

Overall

The game takes a different approach than it did with the previous titles, and is set out in several episodes. You will play through different parts per chapter before moving on to the next ‘episode’, which was influenced by the style used in the TV shows LOST and 24. Each episode is expected to last around 30-40 minutes. Downloadable content has been confirmed though, so new episodes can be downloaded.

With the release of Alone in the Dark 5 approaching fast, and with a demo being released a short time before the main release, there is certainly going to be a lot of hype over this great looking title. With its early in the year release it certainly will get a good edge over the likes of Resident Evil 5. But will all the unique interactions and game play style be enough for it to survive the horror of the horror survival king? We’ll have to wait and see.
