Away From Keyboard - Magic: The Gathering - Avatar: The Last Airbender

Feature

Balance. Harmony. Destiny. These core themes of the beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender have been masterfully woven into the fabric of Magic: The Gathering with the release of the latest Universes Beyond expansion. Unlike previous smaller Secret Lair drops, this set is a full-scale launch, complete with Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, and Prerelease events, cementing its place in Magic's current timeline. We at Hooked Gamers were lucky enough to be invited to a pre-release event hosted at Fortress in Melbourne to bend air, water, fire, and earth.

Magic: The Gathering - Avatar: The Last Airbender allows players to master the four elements and join Aang, Katara, Sokka, Zuko, and Toph in a quest to restore peace to a world ravaged by the Fire Nation. The set promises a unique draft environment centered around elemental synergy and tactical combat. Master the Elements (Setting the Scene)The set transports players directly into the world of the Four Nations, featuring iconic locations, creatures (like Appa and Momo), and the powerful bending techniques of the main cast.

The storyline follows the Gaang's journey to restore balance, perfectly captured by legendary creatures and powerful Saga cards. The primary visual appeal focuses on bringing the show's vibrant animation style and dynamic action to card frames.

Raised Foil: A premium treatment available on key cards like the double-faced Avatar Aang card, which transforms into his fully realized Avatar state.
Scene Boxes: These collectible items contain multiple Borderless cards that combine to recreate iconic, powerful moments from the series, allowing fans to physically piece together pivotal story moments.
Full-Art Lands: The Commander's Bundle features stunning Full-Art Basic Lands depicting the beautiful landscapes of the Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads.

The set heavily features legendary characters, many of whom utilize the new bending mechanics to represent their unique fighting styles.

New mechanics

The core mechanical focus of the set is the introduction of four new keyword mechanics, one for each primary element, that encourage specific tactical playstyles and colour combinations.

Airbending
A keyword action that exiles a targeted permanent or spell. The owner can then recast it later by paying 2 mana rather than its full mana cost. In this set, Airbending represents evasion, disrupting opponents by clearing the battlefield temporarily, or using air to save your own permanents (bouncing them to safety).

Waterbending
An alternative cost mechanic. When paying a generic mana cost, you can tap an untapped artifact or creature you control instead of paying one generic mana for each. Rewards building a "go-wide" strategy with small creatures and artifacts (like Clues), allowing resources to flow together to cast powerful spells or activate abilities, similar to the flexible, flowing nature of water.

Earthbending
A keyword action. You choose a target land you control, and it becomes a 0/0 creature with Haste, then gets X +1/+1 counters. If the land creature dies or is exiled, it returns to the battlefield tapped as a land. These cards capture the defensive and forceful nature of Earthbenders. It utilizes the land itself for aggression, creating strong, resilient creatures that can be repeatedly called upon.

Firebending
A keyword. Whenever a creature with Firebending attacks, you add (X) red mana to your mana pool. This mana is lost at the end of combat. These cards reward aggressive, combat-focused play. The temporary mana forces players to have instant-speed spells or activated abilities ready to spend the "heat of battle" resources before they vanish.

Returning Mechanics

Double-Faced Sagas
Seen on cards like The Rise of Sozin, these tell key historical and narrative events. When the Saga’s final chapter resolves, it transforms into a powerful permanent, usually a creature.

Lessons
A returning subtype for Instants and Sorceries, though the associated Learn keyword is absent. Instead, cards gain benefits for casting Lessons or having them in the graveyard, encouraging a spell-heavy strategy for characters like Sokka and Aang.

Allies
A returning creature subtype that encourages group synergy and reflects the powerful bond of Team Avatar and the characters they meet on their journey.
